We are sad to announce that on September 21, 2023, at 94, Sherman Whipple “Whip” Saltmarsh Jr. of Winchester, Massachusetts passed away.
He was a lifelong resident of Winchester, attended public schools, and graduated from Winchester High School, Kimball Union Academy, and Boston College. He served in the U.S. Navy.
He also has had a distinguished career that spanned 43 years in public service, serving in positions within the Winchester community, including his terms as a Selectman, first being elected in 1959.

He also served as Chairman of the Board. In a Star editorial, it was stated, “ Mr. Saltmarsh owes his election, in the opinion of the Star, to the fact that he wanted the office he sought sufficiently to work for it and to work hard in many sections of the town. An office worth holding is an office worth working for!” Whip is believed to have been the youngest Selectman to have held office and the youngest board chairman. He was also the first Selectman elected to a second three-year term. He served as a Town Meeting Member for 32 years. For 14 of those years, Whip was the elected State Representative from Winchester. He was a member and chair of the Republican Town Committee.
There is not a person in Winchester who does not benefit every day from some project sponsored by or contribution made by Whip. Sherman W. Saltmarsh has personified The Rotary ideal of “Service Above Self.” He has supported the Rotary Club of Winchester monetarily for over half a century, and in 2019, he was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow. We mourn his loss.
